Les Gets is a genuinely charming French village that also happens to open onto the enormous Portes du Soleil, the ski area that spans the French and Swiss border. The village sits at 1,172m and the skiing tops out at 1,965m, and the season runs December to April.

Who Les Gets suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Families with young children. The ski schools, the ESF snow garden and the lifts are all on the snow front in the flat village centre, with a carousel from 1871 a short walk away.
- Beginners. Dedicated beginner zones on the Chavannes and a P'tite Glisse pass covering twelve easy lifts and thirteen runs mean first timers pay only for what they use.
- Non skiers. Non skiers have the mechanical music museum with more than a thousand pieces, the Alta Lumina forest light trail, an ice rink, dog sledding and sledging runs.
- Families with teenagers. Teenagers have two snowparks, a boardercross and a marked freeride zone, and the Portes du Soleil pass opens twelve resorts across France and Switzerland.
Less good for
- Snow sure. The village sits at 1,172 metres and the sector tops out at 1,965 metres, so the slopes depend more on the weather than in higher resorts.
- Off piste. Strong skiers wanting steep or off piste terrain on the doorstep will find more of it elsewhere, though Mont Chéry has the sector's more challenging runs.

The skiing
The tree lined runs are a joy in bad weather and lovely on a bluebird day, and the wider Portes du Soleil gives stronger skiers hundreds of kilometres to explore. Beginners and children are especially well looked after here.
The village and the evenings
The centre keeps its character with a proper village square, good restaurants and a mechanical music museum that the kids enjoy on a rest afternoon. It feels lived in rather than staged.
Getting there
Geneva is barely over an hour away, which makes Les Gets one of the quickest French transfers going.
