Livigno sits high in a remote valley near the Swiss border and enjoys duty free status, which makes it excellent value for a week's skiing and shopping. The village sits at 1,816m and the skiing tops out at 2,767m, and the season runs late November to May. On the piste it is a real strength for confident intermediates.

Who Livigno suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Snow sure. The village sits at 1,816 metres, so all the piste we measure lies above 1,800 metres, and the skiing climbs to 2,767 metres.
- Value for money. Livigno is a non customs zone, so its 250 or so shops sell without the usual Italian tax, and fuel and shopping cost less than in the rest of Italy.
- Families with teenagers. The Mottolino snowpark hosted the snowboard and freeski events of the 2026 Winter Olympics, and teenagers can ride the same park this winter.
- Groups of friends. Groups watching their spending like the duty free prices, wide reds on both sides of the valley and après at Stalet, the big bar at the San Rocco gondola.
Less good for
- Beginners. We measure only about a quarter of the piste as gentler than 15 percent, so nervous first timers may find the step up from the nursery slopes a big one.
- Mileage chasers. Mottolino and Carosello 3000 face each other across the valley with no lift between them, so you cross on the bus and pick one side for the day.

The skiing
The terrain spreads along both sides of the valley, mostly gentle and intermediate, with a strong terrain park and reliable snow. It is a great choice for improvers and for groups watching the budget.
The village and the evenings
The long village strip is lively and friendly, with plenty of bars and shops taking advantage of the tax free prices. It has a cheerful, sociable feel.
Getting there
Zurich is the usual airport, a little over three hours away by road. Innsbruck works too, at about 2 hours 50 over the passes, if its flights suit you better.
