Is Hintertux right for you?
Hintertux sits at the head of the Zillertal and is home to the only glacier in Austria that skis all year round. The village sits at 1,500m and the skiing tops out at 3,239m, and there is skiing all year round. On the piste it is a real strength for improvers moving from blue into red and confident intermediates.

Who Hintertux suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Snow sure. Hintertux sits at 1,500 metres under its glacier, we measure 96 percent of the piste above 1,800 metres, and the skiing reaches 3,239 metres.
- Mileage chasers. From early December to mid April the glacier joins the Penken above Mayrhofen and its neighbours in Zillertal 3000, about 206 kilometres of piste.
- Families with young children. The Eggalm children's park has a ski carousel, magic carpet and snow tubing, and the Playarena in the valley is an indoor playground of 1,200 square metres.
Less good for
- Non skiers. Hintertux is small and the valley's villages are spread out, so a non skier hoping for shops and a lively main street will find more in Mayrhofen.
- Après. There are après bars from ski huts to the valley and a late Nightliner bus, but the scene is nothing like Mayrhofen's, so party groups may be disappointed.

The Zillertal pass covers 546km across four separate areas that are not all joined to each other. From Hintertux you can ski 206km without getting on a bus, train or car.
Hintertux's own sector is 62km. Our own measurement of the run geometry around Hintertux comes to 110km of graded piste, and that is what the profile below is drawn from.
The 546km Superskipass figure DOUBLE-COUNTS: Mayrhofen's 142km and Ski Zillertal 3000's 206km overlap on Penken, Rastkogel and Eggalm. They must never be added. Four separate areas, and the Hintertux glacier needs a bus from the Mayrhofen side.

The skiing
The glacier gives long, reliable descents from over 3,000m, and the resort connects to the wider Zillertal area on the regional pass. Conditions up high are excellent even when the rest of the Alps is short of snow.
The village and the evenings
The village at the foot of the glacier is small and no frills, focused firmly on the skiing. It is quiet in the evenings and all about the mountain.
