Is Andermatt right for you?
Andermatt has quietly become one of the most interesting resorts in the Alps, thanks to heavy snowfall and a major investment that has smartened up the village and linked the ski areas. The village sits at 1,444m and the skiing tops out at 2,922m, and the season runs December to April. On the piste it is a real strength for improvers moving from blue into red.

Who Andermatt suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Off piste. The Gemsstock, reached by cable car from the village, has 1,521 metres of vertical, steep gullies and celebrated freeride terrain, best skied with a mountain guide.
- Snow sure. We measure 76 percent of the piste above 1,800 metres, and the skiing reaches 2,922 metres above the old village.
- Mileage chasers. Intermediates can ski from Nätschen above the village over the Oberalp Pass to Sedrun and Disentis, crossing from Uri into Graubünden on one linked area.
Less good for
- Après. Après is relaxed, a drink at the Gurschen umbrella bar or in the village, and evenings are for dinner and an early night rather than a party.
- Beginners. There is the Matti children's area and a family lift at Realp, but the easy terrain is spread out, so beginners will not find one big gentle area.

The skiing
The Gemsstock is the serious mountain, with steep off piste that gets tracks late, while the linked Sedrun side offers gentler cruising. The snow record here is genuinely excellent.
The village and the evenings
The old village core still feels authentic, now sitting alongside a new pedestrian quarter with hotels and restaurants. It blends heritage and polish.
Getting there
Zurich is only about an hour and a half away, making Andermatt one of the more convenient Swiss options.
