Obertauern sits at 1,740m in a high mountain pass, which makes it one of the most snow sure resorts in Austria despite its compact size. The skiing tops out at 2,304m, and the season runs late November to May. Gentle and forgiving, which is why improvers love it and why strong skiers run out of road by Thursday.

Who Obertauern suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Après. Obertauern has its own après mile, where visitors and locals meet at the end of the day, and night skiing on Monday and Thursday evenings.
- Groups of friends. The Tauernrunde circuit lets a group ski round the village from one lift to the next without repeating a run, then meet on the après mile.
- Families with young children. Many hotels sit close to the slopes, and the Bobby Route is a child friendly version of the Tauernrunde for the youngest skiers.
Less good for
- Mileage chasers. The circuit is self contained, and while the resort gives more than 100 kilometres of slopes, we measure about 74 kilometres of marked piste.
- Non skiers. Obertauern is mostly about the skiing, with cross country trails, tobogganing and winter walks, so non skiers wanting shops or sights may find the days long.

The skiing
The terrain is mostly gentle and intermediate, wonderful for cruising the loop, and the long season runs from late autumn well into spring. Almost everything is ski in and ski out.
The village and the evenings
The village is functional rather than pretty, built for convenience, with a cheerful after ski scene. It is all about maximising time on reliable snow.
