Is Mayrhofen right for you?
Mayrhofen is one of the best known resorts in the Zillertal valley, a lively town with a big ski area above it and a famously steep run, the Harakiri. The village sits at 630m and the skiing tops out at 2,412m, and the season runs December to April. On the piste it is a real strength for improvers moving from blue into red and confident intermediates.

Who Mayrhofen suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Après. Après starts on the Penken in the early afternoon and carries on in the town's bars, and Snowbombing takes over each April, from 5 to 10 April 2027.
- Groups of friends. Groups get a lively main street of bars, the steep Harakiri run to brag about and a whole valley of skiing on the Zillertal Superskipass.
- Families with young children. The Ahorn is sold as the winter world for beginners and families, with wide, easy runs, a ski school practice area and an indoor play room at the top.
- Mileage chasers. A week here means the Zillertal Superskipass, which covers every lift in the valley, the Hintertux glacier included, and the ski buses that link them.
Less good for
- Couples. The town is lively and Snowbombing fills it in April, so couples after quiet evenings should pick their week with care and avoid 5 to 10 April 2027.
- Off piste. We measure no off piste itinerary here, and the challenge is on the piste, on runs like Harakiri, so powder hunters will find more elsewhere.

The skiing
The skiing is mostly intermediate and reached by gondola from the valley floor, with plenty of cruising and a strong terrain park. The nearby Hintertux glacier is on the same regional pass for guaranteed snow.
The village and the evenings
The town has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a busy after ski scene. It is well set up for families by day and groups by night.
Getting there
Innsbruck is only about an hour away, with a regional train running up the valley.
