Is Wengen right for you?
Wengen is a car free village perched on a sunny ledge in the Jungfrau region, reached only by mountain railway. The village sits at 1,274m and the skiing tops out at 2,320m, and the season runs December to April. On the piste it is a real strength for improvers moving from blue into red and confident intermediates. The pass covers 211km. From the village you can ski 101km without getting on a bus.

Who Wengen suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Families with young children. The Figeller practice area sits in the middle of the car free village, with four magic carpets and three small drag lifts, and children start ski school from three.
- Beginners. Beyond the village practice area there are more beginner areas at Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen, both a short train or cable car ride up.
- Couples. With no road up from Lauterbrunnen, the main street is a place to walk and the evenings are relaxed, which makes a calm, quiet base for two.
- Non skiers. A winter hiking and sledging pass covers about 100 kilometres of trails and 50 of sledge runs, and the train continues to the Jungfraujoch at 3,454 metres.
Less good for
- Après. Wengen has one après bar and club and a handful of hotel bars with open fires, which suits a quiet drink rather than a loud week.
- Mileage chasers. The sector shared with Grindelwald has about 102 kilometres of piste, and Mürren is a train ride away rather than a ski across.

The skiing
The terrain is gentle and scenic, ideal for families and cruisers, and home to the famous Lauberhorn downhill race each January. It is not a resort for adrenaline seekers, but it is glorious for relaxed days.
The village and the evenings
With no cars, the village stays quiet and safe, and the pace is unhurried. It feels like stepping back in time in the best way.
Getting there
Fly to Zurich or Geneva and take the trains in via Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen.
