Who Châtel suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Families with young children. La Belette, a themed green run with twenty fun features along the way, is made for children, and the ESF's Club Piou Piou takes them from three.
- Families with teenagers. Super-Châtel has one of the largest snowparks in France, with long lines for every level and a boardercross that starts from the park.
- Value for money. Châtel is a friendly, good value base in a working Savoyard village, with the whole Portes du Soleil there on the wider pass.
- Mileage chasers. From Pré la Joux you can ski over to Avoriaz and on into the Portes du Soleil, twelve resorts across France and Switzerland on one pass.
Less good for
- Snow sure. The village sits at 1,200 metres and the skiing above it tops out at 2,084 metres, so the slopes rely more on the weather than in higher resorts.
- Après. Après is relaxed, with a micro brewery, a wine bar, a handful of pubs and one disco, plenty for families but not enough for a party week.

From here you can loop the famous Portes du Soleil circuit across into Switzerland and back, taking in Morgins, Champéry and Avoriaz along the way. The local slopes suit families and improvers well.
The village and the evenings
The village stretches along the valley with plenty of traditional chalets, cheese shops and cosy places to eat. It has a relaxed, unpretentious feel.
Getting there
Geneva is about an hour and a half away by road, so transfers are short and simple.
