Kronplatz is a distinctive rounded mountain in the northern Dolomites, famous for immaculate grooming, fast lifts and wide, confidence building pistes. The village sits at 1,200m and the skiing tops out at 2,266m, and the season runs December to April. On the piste it is a real strength for improvers moving from blue into red.

Who Kronplatz suits, and who it suits less
Best for
- Families with young children. There are secured children's areas for learning, family toboggan runs and apartments suited to families, all around wide, carefully prepared pistes.
- Food lovers. South Tyrol mixes Tyrolean and Italian cooking, speck, dumplings and Schlutzkrapfen alongside pasta and espresso, and the huts on Kronplatz are known for it.
- Non skiers. Non skiers can ride up to the summit museums of mountaineering and mountain photography, then wander Bruneck's old town or try the toboggan runs.
Less good for
- Après. Evenings are about food and wellness hotels rather than dancing on tables, and Bruneck has more going on, so party groups will find it quiet.
- Snow sure. The lowest runs end below 1,000 metres and the summit sits at 2,266 metres, so the lower slopes depend more on the weather than in higher resorts.

The skiing
The terrain fans out in all directions from the summit, mostly gentle and intermediate, with a couple of steeper black runs for a challenge. The grooming and lift system are among the best in the Alps.
The village and the evenings
The mountain even has striking museums at the summit, including one of Reinhold Messner's, which make for an unusual rest stop. The surrounding villages are quiet and traditional.
Getting there
Innsbruck is under two hours away over the Brenner, with Venice a scenic alternative to the south.
