Where to eat and drink in Chamonix: glacier lunches, town dinners
Lunch on whichever hill you are skiing, dinner in town, and book it. Chalet Refuge de Lognan is the lunch with the glacier view, Le Monchu is the busy room to book first, MUMMA is the change of pace, Le Café Comptoir in Vallorcine is the quiet local one, and L'Hydromel is the bar.
Chamonix eats like the town it is. People live here all year, so the restaurants are proper ones, and the range runs from Savoyard rooms to small sharing plates and a cafe that roasts its own coffee. The ski areas are separate, so lunch depends on which hill you are on that day. Dinner is in town, or a train ride up the valley.
On the Grands Montets, Chalet Refuge de Lognan is the lunch with the view, straight out over the Glacier d'Argentiere. The hot chocolate is the order. Book for a table inside, or take your chances on the terrace in decent weather, and bring cash.
For dinner, Le Monchu is the busiest room in the valley and the one to book first. The pierrade is the reason, a hot stone on the table and thin slices of beef to cook on it yourself, and it takes a big table without fuss. When the group has had its fill of stone and cheese, MUMMA is the change of pace, small plates in the evening only, and the crab and jalapeno rice balls are the thing to order. Tables are hard to get, so book as early as you can. For something quieter, Le Café Comptoir in Vallorcine is close to the station, so nobody has to drive. The menu is short and changes, and the room is full of locals.
L'Hydromel is the bar, for a burger, a local beer and a bill that is fair for Chamonix. In the morning, Moody Coffee Roasters is small and full first thing, so go later if you want a seat, though by then the ginger chilli cookies may have sold out. Book dinner before you arrive rather than on the night, and if you are staying up the valley, work out the train home before the wine list.
Mountain lunch
Lunch looking straight out over the Glacier d'Argentiere, with a hot chocolate people name on its own. Take cash.
Chalet Refuge de Lognan
Looks straight out over the Glacier d'Argentiere, which is the reason to go. The hot chocolate is the signature order and gets named independently. Reserve if you want to sit inside, though in decent weather you can just order and eat out on the terrace. Take cash, because the card machine is not reliable up there.
Dinner
Beef you sear yourself for a big table, small plates that are hard to book, and a quiet room in Vallorcine full of locals.
Le Monchu
The busiest room in the valley by a very long way, and it earns it on the pierrade, thin beef you sear yourself on a hot stone at the table. Raclette is the other order and two separate parties called it the highlight of their trip. Takes a large table happily. The room heats up once the stones are out, which is rather the point in February.
MUMMA
Small sharing plates, dinner only, and the crab and jalapeno rice balls are what everybody names, usually while ordering a second round. The fire grilled lion's mane mushroom is the other one and a single portion does not share. Booking is genuinely hard, so try early and expect to leave a card.
Le Café Comptoir
A short walk from the Vallorcine gondola and close to the station, so the free guest card train gets you there and back without a car. Small changing menu rather than a long list. Tataki de beef with sesame rice cakes and the blueberry tart are the two things people name. Full of locals and much quieter than anything slope side.
Bars
Burgers, homemade chips and a good local beer list, and fair for Chamonix.
L'Hydromel
Burgers are the reason to go, the double smash and the Savoyard one with the house mayo. Chips are homemade and there are sweet potato fries if you want them. Good local beer list and a happy hour two separate people mention unprompted. Reasonable for Chamonix, which is worth saying.
Cafes and quick bites
They roast their own, and it is busy first thing and calm later in the day.
Moody Coffee Roasters
They roast their own, which makes this the specialty coffee address in the valley. Flat white and cortado are the two that come up again and again. Very small, so it is rammed first thing and calm by four, which is when to go if you want to sit down. Strong vegan bakery too, and the ginger chilli cookies sell out.
