Like SkiWelt, but in Switzerland: the traditional family week, higher and smaller

The SkiWelt is a big, gentle family week. Our own line on it is one of the largest linked areas, gentle and great value, and big area, value and families are the three things on our list of what it does best. We measure 258 kilometres of piste around it, the third most of the 55 resorts we cover, with 133 kilometres of blue and easier, and only 24 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, the smallest share of the 13 Austrian resorts we cover. It is traditional and friendly by our read.
It is also the lowest resort we cover: the village is at 620 metres, the skiing tops out at 1,958 by our measure, and almost none of the piste reaches 1,800.
The honest headline: Switzerland has the character, higher up, but not the size. Grindelwald and Adelboden are the only two of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover that we class as both traditional and family, as we class the SkiWelt, and both are gentle underfoot. The bigger of them, Grindelwald, measures 132 kilometres of piste around the village against your 258. And value, on the SkiWelt's list, is on neither of theirs.
| Resort | Village | Top of the skiing, measured | Ski area | Piste we measure around the village | Blue and easier | Steeper than one in four | Gentler than 15% | Piste at or above 1,800 m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your benchmarkSkiWelt | 620 m | 1,958 m | Wilder Kaiser, not yet classified in our data | 258 km | 133 km | 24% | 34% | Almost none |
| Grindelwald | 1,034 m | 2,496 m | Jungfrau Ski Region: 150 km from Grindelwald's own lifts, 211 km on the pass | 132 km | 55 km | 15% | 42% | 59% |
| Adelboden | 1,350 m | 2,356 m | 85 km linked from the village. The 188 km pass spans five areas, not all joined | 115 km | 52 km | 25% | 38% | 55% |
Arosa is the other Swiss answer, and the one we would point to if the size and the snow matter more than the village. It is gentle, sunny and family minded by our read, but we do not class it as traditional, and our matching leaves it off its Swiss list for the SkiWelt.
Grindelwald: the closest on the room to roam, with gentler skiing still

Grindelwald keeps both of the SkiWelt's tags, traditional and family, and families are on its list with scenery and rail access. Our read is postcard pretty, and our one line is skiing beneath the north face of the Eiger. Our guide fills in the rest: a village on a shelf of meadows with the north face straight above it, its own railway station, and trains and gondolas, rather than one network of chairlifts, to take you up the mountain.
It is gentler than the SkiWelt, which takes some doing. Forty-two percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, the third biggest share of the 55 resorts we cover, against your 34, and only 15 percent is steeper than one in four, against your 24. The reds average 18.3 percent, the fifth gentlest of the 55 resorts we cover, and the blues 13.5, against your 22.0 and 15.6. The strong skier in the family is not forgotten: there are 19 kilometres of black, against your 20.
What you give up is size. We measure 132 kilometres of piste around Grindelwald, with 55 of blue and easier against your 133. From Grindelwald's own lifts you can reach 150 kilometres of the Jungfrau Ski Region. The pass covers 211, but Mürren and the Schilthorn are on it without a lift link.
It is higher, though not high. The village is at 1,034 metres, 414 above yours, and the skiing reaches 2,496 by our measure, 538 higher. Fifty-nine percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, against almost none at home. That top sits within a few metres of the line our snow sure test draws, so we give you the figures rather than a label.
Wengen, across the ridge on the same pass, is the quieter way to do it. It is peaceful and car free by our read, with families on its list, and we class it as family but not traditional.
Adelboden: the closest on the chalet village and the feel underfoot

Adelboden: 115 km of piste we measure. 52 km blue and easier 46%49 km red 43%13 km black 11%
Our matching puts Adelboden nearest to the SkiWelt of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover. Our read on it is traditional and warm, our one line is a classic chalet village linked to Lenk, and traditional, families and World Cup racing are the three things on its list.
Underfoot it is the nearer of the two to home. Twenty-five percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, against your 24, and 38 percent is gentler than 15 percent, against 34. Its blues average 14.5 percent and its reds 21.3, against your 15.6 and 22.0. A SkiWelt cruiser will feel at home on day one.
The size needs explaining, because the headline figure flatters it. The pass covers 188 kilometres across five areas, and they are not all joined. From the village you can ski 85 kilometres without transport, and that includes Lenk, which is joined by lift; the other areas sit outside it. Around the village we measure 115 kilometres of piste, 144 fewer than around the SkiWelt, with 52 of blue and easier and 12.9 of black.
It is the higher village of the two, at 1,350 metres, 730 above yours, and 55 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres. But the skiing tops out at 2,356 metres by our measure, 398 above your top and short of the height our snow sure test asks for, so it is not snow sure on our measure.
What the SkiWelt gives a family is a traditional village, gentle skiing and room to roam, and Grindelwald keeps the first two with the gentlest mix on this page, then gives you the most skiing within reach of the village. Go knowing there is far less piste and far less blue than at home, that value is not its selling point, and that trains and gondolas do the linking. If the chalet village and the same feel underfoot matter most, Adelboden.
