Like Saalbach-Hinterglemm, but in Switzerland: the family week travels, the party stays

What makes Saalbach-Hinterglemm so easy to love is that it does three things at once. It is a big circuit: we measure 192 kilometres of piste around the village, the seventh most of the 55 resorts we cover, and you ski it as a loop from village to village around the valley. It is a family mountain, with 122 kilometres of blue and easier, the sixth most of the 55 we cover, and a quieter village in Hinterglemm. And it is a party, with the slope side bars full in ski boots before the lifts have closed.
It also has two quirks. The skiing is steeper than its colours suggest: 42 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, the fourth highest share of the 55 we cover, and its reds average 27.8 percent, the steepest of the 13 Austrian resorts we cover. And it is low, with the village at 1,003 metres and the skiing topping out at 2,090. Only 19 percent of the piste we measure is above 1,800 metres, so it is not snow sure on our measure.
The honest headline: Switzerland keeps the family week and loses the party. Our matching finds no close Swiss twin for Saalbach, and none of the Swiss resorts it suggests is lively by our read. What Switzerland can add is height, and one pick turns that into a week with the size of Saalbach and the snow it lacks.

Plus 9 km of marked off piste itinerary, kept out of the piste total.
Arosa is the one Swiss pick that skis at Saalbach's scale. It shares a single linked area with Lenzerheide, 225 kilometres, the two valleys joined by one cable car, with three sources agreeing on the figure. Around Arosa itself we measure 183 kilometres of piste, 8.8 fewer than around Saalbach and the most of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover. Of that, 97 kilometres is blue and easier, also first of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, and about four fifths of Saalbach's.
It suits the same families. Our read on Arosa is gentle and sunny, a bowl with families first on its list, and Saalbach is a sunny circuit with families on its list too. Arosa even keeps some of Saalbach's adventure: 8.5 kilometres of marked off piste itinerary, against 12, and blacks that average 32.4 percent, the steepest of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover.
Then comes the part a Saalbach regular will notice most. The village sits at 1,800 metres, 797 above Saalbach's and the second highest of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, and the skiing reaches 2,848 metres by our measure, 758 higher than Saalbach's top. Sixty-five percent of the piste we measure is above 1,800 metres, against 19, so Arosa is snow sure on our measure where Saalbach is not.
What you give up is the noise and the bite in the middle. Arosa is not lively by our read, and there is no Saalbach style après to replace. And the reds are much kinder: 24 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, against 42, and the reds average 21.8 percent against 27.8. Strong skiers will find their fun on the blacks and the itinerary rather than on every red.

Adelboden: 115 km of piste we measure. 52 km blue and easier 46%49 km red 43%13 km black 11%
Our matching puts Adelboden nearest to Saalbach of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, though it is a loose match, and the thing it carries over is the family. Our read on it is traditional and warm, a classic chalet village with families and World Cup racing on its list. Saalbach has hosted major international racing too.
The skiing needs explaining, because the headline figure flatters it. The pass covers 188 kilometres across five areas, and they are not all joined. From the village you can ski 85 kilometres without transport, and that includes Lenk, which is joined by lift; the other four areas sit outside it. Around the village we measure 115 kilometres of piste, about three fifths of what we measure around Saalbach, with 52 kilometres of blue and easier.
It is kinder underfoot. Thirty-eight percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, against 31 at Saalbach, the blues average 14.5 percent against 17.8, and the reds 21.3 against 27.8. For a family with small children that is the point. The village is higher, at 1,350 metres, 347 above Saalbach's, and the skiing reaches 2,356, 266 higher. That gives it 55 percent of its piste above 1,800 metres, but the top stops short of the height we ask for, so it is not snow sure on our measure either.
Wengen, which our matching also suggests, is out on purpose. It is car free and peaceful by our read, a fine week but the opposite of a Saalbach evening, and our measurement of its top runs up to the Jungfraujoch, far above Wengen's own skiing, so we would rather not compare its figures until we have checked them.
What keeps families going back to Saalbach is a big, sunny mountain with easy skiing everywhere, and Arosa matches that better than the other Swiss resorts our matching suggests: one linked area, the most piste and the most blue and easier of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, and enough piste at height to count as snow sure on our measure, which Saalbach's is not. Go knowing the reds are gentler, the evenings quiet and the party stays in Austria. If a traditional village matters more than the size, Adelboden.
