Like Le Grand-Bornand, but in Switzerland: gentler skiing, higher up

The Ski Snug teamUpdated 12 October 20265 min read

Le Grand-Bornand is the quiet one. Our read is rural and friendly, a farming village that keeps things gentle, with families, authenticity and quiet on its list. It suits a first week on skis: of the 85 kilometres we measure around the village, 52 are green and blue, 61 percent, and 17.4 of them are green.

The mountain above the green runs is another matter. The reds average 28.1 percent, the third steepest of the 55 resorts we cover, and 37 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, the fourth biggest share of the 17 French resorts we cover. It is low, too. The village is at 1,000 metres, the highest piste we measure starts at 2,362, and only 15 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres.

The honest headline: no Swiss resort we cover is traditional, quiet and family minded all at once by our read, so something gives. What Switzerland gives back is consistent. Every pick here is gentler than Le Grand-Bornand past the green runs, and every one has more of its skiing above 1,800 metres. Wengen keeps the quiet and the family week, and on our map takes the most of the skiing up high.

All four run from December to April. The Aravis is not classified in our data, so the piste column is what we measure around each village. Wengen's top is its top lift, because our map of its area runs on up to the Jungfraujoch, far above its own runs. Steepness is measured from the gradient, an average per run segment, where a run's grade is set by its steepest pitch. The Swiss grade more kindly, a typical Swiss red averaging 19.9 percent against 24.3 in France, so the gradient is the fair comparison.

One thing none of them can show you is green. Green runs are not reliably tagged at any of the three, so we cannot tell you how much there is.

Our read is peaceful and car free, a balcony village under the Jungfrau, with the car free village, the scenery and families on its list. We tag it quiet and family, as we do Le Grand-Bornand.

The mountain keeps the promise your own line makes. Thirty nine percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, the third biggest share of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, against your 32. The blues average 13.9 percent against 17.4, and the reds 20.1 against 28.1, so the step up from blue is a small one. There are 51 kilometres of blue and easier, against your 52 of green and blue. For the strongest skier in the family there is more black, 20.4 kilometres, the second most of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, against 11.3, though it averages 24.3 percent against your 34.3.

The village is at 1,274 metres, 274 above yours. On our mapped area 66 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, against 15, and the median piste height is 1,890 metres, 408 above Le Grand-Bornand's. That map reaches the Jungfraujoch, though, so we make no snow sure call until Wengen's own runs are measured alone.

Wengen's own sector of the Jungfrau Ski Region is 101 kilometres. We measure 125 around the village, but that shares ground with Grindelwald, and Mürren is on the same pass without a lift link. What you give up is the tradition, which is not on Wengen's list. You fly to Zurich or Geneva.

Our matching puts Adelboden and Villars level as the closest Swiss resorts to Le Grand-Bornand. Adelboden is the one for the village: traditional and warm by our read, a classic chalet village linked to Lenk, with tradition, families and World Cup racing on its list.

The skiing sits higher, if not at the top. The village is at 1,350 metres, 350 above yours, and 55 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, against 15. The median piste height is 1,829 metres, 347 above yours. But the highest piste we measure is at 2,345 metres, against your 2,362, so it is no higher at the top, and short of snow sure on our measure.

There are 52.3 kilometres of blue and easier, the same figure as your green and blue. Thirty eight percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, against 32, the blues average 14.5 percent and the reds 21.3, against your 17.4 and 28.1, and 25 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, against 37.

From Adelboden you can ski 85 kilometres without transport, Lenk included; the pass covers 188 across five areas that are not all joined. Our own measurement around the village, 115 kilometres, runs past the linked 85 into skiing beyond it, so read it with that in mind. The trade is the quiet: it is not on Adelboden's list.

Villars is the other of the two our matching puts closest. Our read is family friendly and calm, a relaxed family resort with a view of Mont Blanc, and we tag it quiet and family. Geneva is its airport, as it is yours.

It is gentle in the way you might expect Le Grand-Bornand to be. Sixty eight percent of the piste is blue and easier, 48 kilometres of it, and 37 percent is gentler than 15 percent, against 32. The reds average 23.6 percent, the second steepest of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, but still well short of your 28.1.

The catch is height and size. The village is at 1,300 metres, 300 above yours, and 25 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, against 15. But the skiing tops out at 2,074 metres, the lowest of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover and below your highest piste. Around the village we measure 71 kilometres; the linked area is 87, and passes of three days or more also cover the 31 kilometres at Glacier 3000. There is 1.5 kilometres of black, the least of the 55 resorts we cover, and tradition is not on its list.

If you only try one
Wengen

Le Grand-Bornand's list starts with families and ends with quiet, and Wengen keeps both, in a car free village, on a mountain that is gentler than yours past the green runs: 39 percent gentler than 15 percent against 32, and reds averaging 20.1 percent against 28.1. On our mapped area it also has far more of its skiing above 1,800 metres, and more black for whoever wants it. Go knowing tradition is not on its list, its green runs are not mapped well enough for us to count, and you fly to Zurich or Geneva. If the traditional village matters more than the quiet, Adelboden. If a small, quiet week with Geneva as the airport matters most, Villars.
