Like Le Grand-Bornand, but in Italy: the quiet village or the family week?

Le Grand-Bornand is the quiet one. Our read is rural and friendly, a farming village that keeps things gentle, with families, authenticity and quiet on its list. The green runs bear out the family side: 17.4 kilometres of green, inside 52 kilometres of green and blue, 61 percent of the 85 we measure around the village. Past them it is a different mountain. The reds average 28.1 percent, the third steepest of the 55 resorts we cover, and 37 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four. It is low, too: the village is at 1,000 metres, and 15 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800.
The honest headline: nothing in Italy is close. Our matching puts the nearest Italian resort further from Le Grand-Bornand than its closest Swiss or Austrian matches, and none of the three keeps the family week. Green is not reliably tagged at any of them, and every one has less easy piste than yours. What Italy can give you is one side of Le Grand-Bornand with more height above it. Bormio keeps the village side.

Of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, our matching puts Bormio closest to Le Grand-Bornand, and the village is why. Our read is historic and relaxed, a spa town with a famous top to bottom run, with long runs, the thermal spa and racing on its list. We tag it traditional and quiet, and it is the only Italian resort we cover that we tag quiet.
Then the height you do not have. Bormio is snow sure on our measure: 76 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, up to 3,001 metres, 639 above your highest piste. The village is at 1,225 metres, 225 above yours, and the median piste height is 2,098 metres, 616 above Le Grand-Bornand's.
The steep feels familiar in places. Thirty two percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, against your 37, and the blacks average 35.7 percent, the sixth steepest of the 55 resorts we cover, against 34.3. The reds are kinder, 21.7 percent against 28.1, and the blues average 14.6 against 17.4. There is a 4.0 kilometre marked itinerary that drops 1,051 metres, where your village has none in our data.
The trade is the family week. We measure 52.5 kilometres around the village, the fourth smallest of the 55 resorts we cover; its own mountain is 50 kilometres, and the pass covers four separate valleys, with everything beyond the home mountain needing transport. There are 12 kilometres of blue and easier, the least of the 55 we cover, and 26 percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, against 32. Families are not on its list. You fly to Bergamo or Milan.

Kronplatz: 77 km of piste we measure. 36 km blue and easier 47%26 km red 34%14 km black 18%
Kronplatz is the one of the three we tag family. Our read is modern and efficient, a perfectly groomed dome above the Puster valley, with grooming, families and museums on its list. Traditional and quiet do not come with it.
More of its skiing sits up high. The village is at 1,200 metres, 200 above yours, and 51 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, against 15. The median piste height is 1,807 metres, 325 above yours. But the top, 2,266 metres, is the lowest of the 10 Italian resorts we cover and 96 below your highest piste, so it is short of snow sure on our measure.
The catch for a family is the blues. They average 20.2 percent, the steepest of the 55 resorts we cover and nearly level with a typical Italian red. Only 16 percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, the smallest share of the 55 we cover, against your 32. The reds, at 24.0 percent, are kinder than your 28.1, but 43 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, the joint second biggest share of the 55 resorts we cover. There are 36 kilometres of blue and easier against your 52, and 14.1 of black against 11.3. It is a mountain for a family already past the blues.
We measure 77 kilometres around the village, against your 85. Kronplatz sits on Dolomiti Superski, a pass across twelve areas of which only four are joined by lift. You fly to Innsbruck or Venice.

Courmayeur keeps your airport: Geneva is one of its two, with Turin. Our read is chic and welcoming, the Italian side of Mont Blanc and made for lunch, upmarket and expert, with long lunches, style and off piste on its list. Our guide calls it a chic stone town and one of the oldest mountain towns in the Alps, built on mountaineering, and says families are well catered for on the main area, which you reach by cable car from the edge of town.
It is snow sure on our measure: 72 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, up to 2,715 metres, 353 above your highest piste. The village is at 1,224 metres, 224 above yours. And it is the one pick with a bigger gentle share than yours, 35 percent against 32, with blues averaging 14.0 percent against your 17.4. The reds, at 24.3 percent, are the steepest of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, and the blacks average 36.4, the fourth steepest of the 55 we cover.
The trade is size. We measure 42 kilometres of piste, the smallest of the 55 resorts we cover, and the resort's own 100 kilometres includes off piste by its own wording. There are 16 kilometres of blue and easier, against your 52, and neither quiet nor traditional is among our tags for it.
What Le Grand-Bornand has that most resorts do not is a quiet, traditional village, and Bormio is the only Italian resort we cover that we tag quiet. We tag it traditional too, and it has snow sure skiing on our measure above it. Go knowing it is small, it has the least easy piste of the 55 resorts we cover, families are not on its list, and you fly to Bergamo or Milan: it is a week for confident skiers. If the children are already past the blues, Kronplatz. If someone in the family is on skis for the first time, none of these three matches the green runs you have at home.
