Like Klosters, but in Italy: the same shape of week, a louder village

The Ski Snug teamUpdated 12 October 20265 min read

Klosters keeps its voice down. Our read of it is discreet and pretty, the quiet neighbour to Davos, and we tag it upmarket, quiet and good for families. The village sits low, at 1,191 metres, under skiing that is high: 69 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, up to 2,808, so on our measure Klosters is snow sure. Around the village we measure 97 kilometres, on a Davos Klosters pass of six separate mountains, sold as 300 kilometres and measured at 224. Klosters reaches the Parsenn, the one it shares with Davos, by the Gotschna cable car.

Underfoot it is gentle. The reds average 17.1 percent and the blacks 21.1, the gentlest reds and blacks of the 55 resorts we cover, though only 24 kilometres of the piste is graded blue or easier.

The honest headline: none of the three Italian resorts our matching puts closest is tagged quiet, and all three average steeper reds than yours. What Italy can match is the shape of the week: an upmarket village low in the valley, high skiing above it, spread across more than one mountain. Cortina d'Ampezzo matches that most closely.

All four run from December to April. Steepness is measured from the gradient: averages per run segment, where a run's grade is set by its steepest pitch, but a fairer ruler across a border than the colour on the map. Across the resorts we cover, an Italian red averages 20.4 percent and a Swiss one 19.9.

Plus 9 km of marked off piste itinerary, kept out of the piste total.

Of every resort we cover, our matching puts Cortina d'Ampezzo closest to Klosters. Both are upmarket on our tags, and the shape is the same: the village is at 1,224 metres, 33 above yours, and 67 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, against your 69. It is snow sure on our measure. The lifts reach 3,028 metres, above the highest piste we measure there, 2,724, which is 84 below your highest piste. The mountain is split, too: in our guide, Cortina's areas are not all linked, and the ski bus or a car is part of the day, a rhythm you already know from the Davos Klosters pass.

Around the town we measure 86 kilometres against your 97, with 38 of blue and easier against 24 and 9.2 kilometres of marked itinerary against 6.5, the second most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover. Its own area total is not classified in our data, and Dolomiti Superski is a pass across twelve areas, only four of them joined by lift, so the measured piste is the fair comparison.

What you give up is the hush and the gentle gradient. Quiet and family are not on its tags. Our read is stylish and scenic, Dolomite drama and Italian style, best for the scenery, style and long lunches, and it is a host of the 2026 Games. The share of steep piste is the biggest difference our matching finds: 25 percent is steeper than one in four, against your 15, and the reds average 21.9 percent against 17.1. You fly to Venice or Innsbruck.

Madonna di Campiglio: 115 km of piste we measure. 54 km blue and easier 47%44 km red 38%17 km black 15%

If the tags matter most, Madonna di Campiglio keeps more of them: upmarket and family, two of your three. Our read is smart and sociable, elegant skiing beneath the Brenta Dolomites, best for style, families and grooming.

It is also the Italian pick nearest your reds. Its reds average 19.7 percent, under a typical Italian red, against your 17.1. Eighteen percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, against 15, and 36 percent is gentler than 15 percent, against 38. And it fixes the map: 54 kilometres of blue and easier against your 24, in 115 kilometres we measure, plus 17.3 kilometres of black against 11.7, both the second most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover. The area is one linked system of 155 kilometres, all three sectors joined by lift.

The trade is the height and the hush. The village is at 1,550 metres, 359 above yours, but the skiing tops out at 2,496 metres by our measure, 312 below your top, and 61 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, against 69. That top is just short of the 2,500 metres our snow sure test asks for, so we leave the call open. Quiet is not on its tags, there is no marked itinerary in our data, and the airports are Verona or Milan.

Alta Badia: 125 km of piste we measure. 76 km blue and easier 61%41 km red 33%8 km black 6%

Alta Badia keeps the gentle shape of Klosters and puts it on a blue map. Fifteen percent of its piste is steeper than one in four, the same share as yours, and 40 percent is gentler than 15 percent, the joint fourth biggest share of the 55 resorts we cover, against your 38. There are 76 kilometres of blue and easier, the most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, against your 24. We tag it family, and our read is warm and welcoming: gentle Dolomite cruising and world class mountain food, best for cuisine, the Sella Ronda and families.

It is snow sure on our measure, with less in hand: 65 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, up to 2,509 metres, 299 below your top. The village is at 1,568 metres, 377 above yours. Alta Badia's own sector is 130 kilometres, and from a base on the Sellaronda around 500 kilometres is in reach by lift, an approximate sum of measured kilometres rather than a published figure.

The trade is the polish and the hard end. Upmarket and quiet are not on its tags, the reds average 21.7 percent against your 17.1, there are 7.5 kilometres of black against 11.7, and there is almost no marked itinerary. You fly to Venice or Innsbruck.

If you only try one
Cortina d'Ampezzo

Under the discretion, a Klosters week is an upmarket village low in the valley, with high skiing above it that is snow sure on our measure, spread across more than one mountain. Cortina is that week in Italy, at almost the same village height and almost the same share of piste up high, with more blue and more marked itinerary. Go knowing the reds have more bite and the mood is stylish rather than quiet. If the family tag and the gentle reds are the point, Madonna di Campiglio.
