Like Crans-Montana, but in Italy: the closest neighbours we measure
The Ski Snug teamUpdated 12 October 20265 min read
Crans-Montana sells the light. Our one line on it is a sunny plateau with wide views over the Rhône, our read is sunny and smart, and sunshine tops our list of what it does best, followed by golf and spa and families. We tag it family.
In its own figures it is a high, gentle mountain with a thin map. Seventy nine percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, the fourth largest share of the 15 Swiss resorts we cover, up to 2,868 metres, so on our measure it is snow sure. Its reds average 19.2 percent, and only five of the 55 resorts we cover have gentler. Yet only 22 kilometres is graded blue or easier, and only four of the 55 we cover have less. It is one linked area of 140 kilometres; around the village we measure 85.
The honest headline: Italy is where our matching finds Crans-Montana's nearest neighbours. Its three closest resorts anywhere are Italian, all three keep your share of gentle ground or more, and all three have more blue and easier. What none of them has is your height at the top of the piste, or sunshine on its list. Alta Badia carries the most across.

Of every resort we cover, our matching puts Alta Badia closest to Crans-Montana, and both are family resorts on our tags. The village is at 1,568 metres, 68 above yours. Our read is warm and welcoming: gentle Dolomite cruising and world class mountain food, best for cuisine, the Sella Ronda and families.
It has what your map lacks. There are 76 kilometres of blue and easier, 61 percent of what we measure and the most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, against your 22. The gentle shape grows rather than shrinks: 40 percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, the joint fourth biggest share of the 55 resorts we cover, against your 36, and only 15 percent is steeper than one in four, against 22.
Our matching names the size of the area as the biggest difference. Alta Badia's own sector is 130 kilometres, and from a base on the Sellaronda around 500 kilometres is in reach by lift, an approximate sum of measured kilometres rather than a published figure. The Dolomiti Superski pass covers twelve areas, only four of them joined.
The trade is the top, and a little of the softness. The skiing reaches 2,509 metres by our measure, 359 below yours, and 65 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, against 79: still snow sure on our measure, with less in hand. Its reds average 21.7 percent against your 19.2, a little over a typical Italian red, and there are 7.5 kilometres of black against 12.9. Neither sunshine nor golf and spa is on its list, and you fly to Venice or Innsbruck rather than Geneva.

Madonna di Campiglio: 115 km of piste we measure. 54 km blue and easier 47%44 km red 38%17 km black 15%
Madonna di Campiglio is the Italian pick nearest your gradient. Its reds average 19.7 percent against your 19.2, both under a typical Italian or Swiss red, and its blues 12.9 against 13.3. At both, 36 percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, and only 18 percent of Madonna's is steeper than one in four, against 22. It keeps your family tag and your village height, too: it sits at 1,550 metres, 50 above Crans-Montana.
It is the closest in kind as well. We tag it upmarket and family, and our read is smart and sociable where yours is sunny and smart: elegant skiing beneath the Brenta Dolomites, best for style, families and grooming. Like Crans-Montana it is one linked area, 155 kilometres with all three sectors joined by lift, against your 140. Around the village we measure 115 kilometres, with 54 of blue and easier against your 22 and 17.3 of black against 12.9.
The trade is the height. The skiing tops out at 2,496 metres by our measure, 372 below yours, and 61 percent of the piste we measure is at or above 1,800 metres, against 79. That top is just short of the 2,500 metres our snow sure test asks for, so we leave the call open. There is no marked itinerary in our data, against your 3.2, which our matching names as the biggest difference, and you fly to Verona or Milan.
Cortina d'Ampezzo: the closest on the size and the top

Cortina d'Ampezzo: 86 km of piste we measure. 38 km blue and easier 45%38 km red 45%9 km black 11%
Plus 9 km of marked off piste itinerary, kept out of the piste total.
Our matching puts Cortina d'Ampezzo second closest to Crans-Montana of every resort we cover, and on size the two are level: we measure 85.5 kilometres of piste around Cortina against your 85.2. It is snow sure on our measure, with 67 percent of the piste we measure at or above 1,800 metres, and 36 percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent at both. Its lifts reach 3,028 metres, the second highest top of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, but that is a lift top above the highest piste we measure, 2,724, which is 144 below your top.
Our read is stylish and scenic, and we tag it upmarket: Dolomite drama and Italian style, best for the scenery, style and long lunches, and a host of the 2026 Games. There are 38 kilometres of blue and easier against your 22, and 9.2 kilometres of marked itinerary against 3.2, the second most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover.
The trade is the village and the family tag. Cortina sits at 1,224 metres, 276 below yours, and our matching names the village height as the biggest difference. Family is not on its tags. The reds average 21.9 percent against your 19.2, and 25 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, against 22. You fly to Venice or Innsbruck.
What Crans-Montana gives a family, sun aside, is a village up high and a gentle mountain that is snow sure on our measure, and Alta Badia keeps all three while fixing your one real gap: 76 kilometres of blue and easier against 22. Go knowing the top is lower, the reds a little steeper and sunshine not on its list. If the soft reds and one linked area are the point, Madonna di Campiglio, where our snow call is open.
