Like Châtel, but in Italy: the family welcome, higher up

Châtel's appeal is easy to state. It has farm village character on the Swiss border, rustic and friendly by our read, and we list it for value, tradition and families. Around it lies the Portes du Soleil, twelve villages across two countries on one linked circuit, measured at 580 kilometres. The skiing is kind without being dull. Of the 82 kilometres we measure around the village, 45 are green or blue, 26 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four, the same as the median resort we cover, and the longest run we measure is the Tovassière, a blue of 3 kilometres with only 220 metres of drop.

What it lacks is height. The village is at 1,200 metres, the skiing we measure tops out at 2,084, and 23 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, so it is not snow sure on our measure.

The honest headline: Italy fixes the height and keeps the family. Our matching puts Madonna di Campiglio, Alta Badia and Cortina d'Ampezzo closest of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, and every one of them is higher than Châtel at the top. What none keeps is the rustic edge: we tag none of them traditional, and none lists value. Alta Badia comes closest on the rest.

All four run from December to April. Steepness is measured from the gradient, because grades differ by country: across the resorts we cover an Italian red averages 20.4 percent and a French one 24.3. These are averages per run segment, and a run's grade is set by its steepest pitch, but they are fairer than the colours. By that measure all three Italian picks have gentler reds than Châtel and less of their piste steeper than one in four.

If value is the part you will not give up, Livigno is one of the Italian resorts we list for it. It is high and lively by our read, not rustic, and it is not among our matching's three.

Alta Badia is warm and welcoming by our read, gentle Dolomite cruising with world class mountain food, and families are on its list beside the cuisine and the Sellaronda. Our guide describes five Ladin speaking villages with an old culture of their own and evenings that are calm rather than loud. That is not Châtel's farm village, but it is the same friendly, family pace.

It is also the nearest thing to your circuit. Alta Badia's own sector is 130 kilometres, and from a base on the Sellaronda around 500 kilometres can be reached by lift, an approximate sum rather than a published figure. The 1,200 kilometres on the Dolomiti Superski pass covers twelve areas, only four of them joined, so do not plan on that.

The skiing is Châtel's, with more of the easy part. We measure 124.5 kilometres around the village, and 76 of them are blue and easier, the most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, against your 45 of green and blue. Forty percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, the joint fourth biggest share of the 55 resorts we cover, against your 35, and only 15 percent is steeper than one in four. The reds average 21.7 percent against your 24.3. The black stays thin, though: 7.5 kilometres, against your 5.4.

The height is the gain. The village sits 368 metres above Châtel's and the skiing tops out at 2,509 metres by our measurement, 425 higher. Sixty five percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, so Alta Badia is snow sure on our measure, if only just at the top. You fly to Venice or Innsbruck.

Of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, our matching puts Madonna di Campiglio closest to Châtel. It keeps the family label and the gentle share: 36 percent of the piste is gentler than 15 percent, against your 35. The character is smart and sociable, elegant skiing beneath the Brenta Dolomites, with style and grooming on its list, and our guide describes a polished pedestrian centre. We tag it upmarket as well as family.

Its area is tidy and fully joined: 155 kilometres across three sectors, all linked by lift. We measure 115 around the village. The reds average 19.7 percent and the blues 12.9, both gentler than yours, and only 18 percent of the piste is steeper than one in four. The longest run we measure is a blue of 2.3 kilometres with 224 metres of drop, the same kind of unhurried cruise as the Tovassière. It also brings the black Châtel lacks: 17.3 kilometres, the second most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, 11.9 more than yours.

The village is 350 metres higher than Châtel's and the skiing reaches 2,496 metres by our measurement, 412 higher, with 61 percent of the piste at or above 1,800 metres. That top sits 4 metres under our 2,500 metre line, so we make no snow sure call either way. You fly to Verona or Milan.

Plus 9 km of marked off piste itinerary, kept out of the piste total.

Cortina's village is at 1,224 metres, just 24 above Châtel's, and we measure 86 kilometres of piste around it, against your 82. Twenty five percent is steeper than one in four, against 26. On those three things our matching finds it close.

It goes much higher. The lifts reach 3,028 metres and the highest piste we measure is at 2,724, and 67 percent of the piste is at or above 1,800 metres, so Cortina is snow sure on our measure, and the call holds on the piste top, not just the lifts. It also has 9.2 kilometres of marked off piste itinerary, the second most of the 10 Italian resorts we cover, where Châtel has none in our data.

The trade is the character. Cortina is stylish and scenic, Dolomite drama and Italian style, and host of the 2026 Games. We tag it upmarket, and neither traditional nor family, so of the three it is the furthest from Châtel's mood. There are 38 kilometres of blue and easier, against your 45 of green and blue. You fly to Venice or Innsbruck.

If you only try one
Alta Badia

A Châtel week is a friendly family week on easy skiing, with a big linked network to roam, and Alta Badia keeps all three: the family label and a warm welcome, more easy piste than any Italian resort we cover, and the Sellaronda. It adds the height Châtel lacks, enough to be snow sure on our measure. Go knowing that value is not on its list and the black stays thin. If you want more black and a resort our matching puts closest, Madonna di Campiglio. If you want the most height and do not mind the gloss, Cortina.
